Agatha Awards
Also called "Malice Domestic," these awards are given annually to books best typified by the works of Agatha Christie. Mysteries receiving awards contain no explicit sex, gore or violence and feature an amateur detective.
Costa Book Awards (formerly Whitbread Book of the Year Awards)
Established in 1971 to "celebrate and promote the best of contemporary British writing," this annual prize is awarded in the categories of fiction, poetry, biography, children's literature and best first novel.
Edgar Awards
Awarded each year to authors of distinguished work in various categories of mystery publications.
Hugo Awards
Annual science fiction achievement award presented by the World Science Fiction Society and determined by popular vote of the membership. This site also lists awards for best new writer, special awards and the Gandalf Award.
Lambda Literary Awards
Annual awards for excellence in gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered literature.
Man Booker Prize for Fiction
One of the most famous literary prizes in the world, this annual prize goes to the year's best novel written by a citizen of the British Commonweath or the Republic of Ireland. Sponsored since 1968 by the Book Trust.
National Book Awards
Since 1950, the United States' "preeminent literary prize" for the best works in fiction, nonfiction, poetry and young people's literature.
National Book Critics Circle Awards
Over 700 active book reviewers come together each year to award prizes for their top choices in fiction, general nonfiction, biography/autobiography, poetry and criticism.
Nebula Awards
Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America, Inc. awards prizes each spring for the best SF/Fantasy novel, novella, novelette and short story.
Nobel Prize for Literature

PEN/Faulkner Awards
Founded in 1980, this award is given to the author of the year's best work of American fiction, as judged by a panel of fellow fiction writers.
Pulitzer Prize Archive
Established by journalist Joseph Pulitzer and administered by the Columbia School of Journalism, awards are given not only for journalism, but also for fiction, U.S. history, biography/autobiography, poetry, general nonfiction, drama and music.
Romance Writers of America Awards
Web site of the RWA including a list of several prizes and award-winning authors of romance fiction, including the RITA and Golden Heart awards.
Spur Awards
Established in 1953 by the Western Writers of America, these awards are given each year for distinguished writing about the American West. Awards are given not only for books in several categories, but also for TV/motion picture drama and documentary.
