Jefferson County Public Library Completes System-Wide Energy Upgrades
Initiative will reduce energy use and cost, saving JCPL $220,000 per year
(Lakewood, Colo. - October 5, 2011) Jefferson County Public Library has substantially completed a $3.5 million project to improve the energy efficiency of Library-owned buildings. The project was completed under an Energy Savings Performance Contract in partnership with the Governor’s Energy Office and McKinstry, a firm specializing in consulting, construction, energy and facility services.
"We are exceptionally pleased with the results of this initiative," said Pam Nissler, acting executive director, JCPL. "It was completed on time and under budget and is expected to result in annual savings of $220,000, with a payback period of about 16 years. In addition, through value engineering, McKinstry saved enough money on the original contract that they have offered to complete a replacement of the Golden Library HVAC system at no additional charge to the Library!" Nissler added.
Energy improvements have been completed at the Arvada, Belmar, Columbine, Evergreen, Golden, Lakewood, and Standley Lake libraries, as well as the Library’s Service Center. Energy improvements included:
- Lighting upgrades;
- Water conservation measures;
- HVAC and controls upgrades
- PC power management;
- Evaporative cooling; and
- Resource conservation management.
These improvements are estimated to reduce carbon emissions related to Library buildings by more than 2,800 tons a year.
Additional work on the Golden Library is expected to begin in November.
