Over the past 25 years, JCPL has invested more than $60 million in capital projects to protect taxpayer assets and meet the growing demand for library services in Jefferson County. To meet projected future demand will require new and expanded libraries throughout the County. Going forward, we're evaluating a growing list of capital projects, including:
- Upgrades to the Evergreen and Columbine libraries. JCPL performs updates to its buildings on a regular schedule in order to meet changing patron needs and comply with safety and other requirements. Evergreen and Columbine are currently due for major updates; however, we have placed these projects on hold pending funding availability.
- Expanding the Golden Library. In 2000, the City of Golden agreed via a vote of its citizens to give JCPL an option to buy land adjoining the current library on the west side to facilitate expansion. Under the current agreement, the Library must complete a plan for expansion by 2014 or the option expires. Development of the Golden Library expansion is on hold pending funding availability.
- A new library in Central Jefferson County (on the Eastern corridor). Key communities, including Wheat Ridge and Edgewater, are currently underserved. We would like to build a new, state-of-the-art community library to serve Jefferson County residents in these and other communities near the County's eastern boundary. This project is on hold pending funding availability.
- A new Library in South Jefferson County. This is one of Jefferson County's most underserved areas in terms of library services, and demographic projections tell us that the population in this area will more than support a full-service library. JCPL owns a parcel of land in the Fehringer Ranch development (at Quincy and Kipling) that could be used for a library, and we would also consider locations further south in unincorporated Jefferson County. These projects are on hold pending funding availability.
Other areas under review include Northwest Arvada and Conifer. We also hope to invest in increasing the number of computers available for public use; keeping up with increased demands for bandwidth and high speed connectivity to the Internet; and creating enhanced spaces within the library where patrons can meet, work and read.
